Under the Open Skies Treaty, a sensor capable of receiving and visualising thermal radiation emitted in the invisible infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum by objects due to their temperature and in the absence of artificial illumination. Line-scanning devices were selected instead of other types of infrared sensors to avoid technology transfer problems that might arise with more sophisticated systems.
