One of a number of inheritance links between constructions posited in construction grammar (2). Involves a type of inheritance (2) in which one construction is a special case of a related construction. This type of link accounts for the existence of substantive idioms in which a particular lexical item or items is/are required for the idiomatic reading to be available. For instance, the following utterance is related to the resultative construction by an instance link, where drive is required in order to obtain the reading of annoy/make someone mad: James drove Jenny round the bend.
