Integration network

A structure employed in Blending theory in order to model the way in which a blended space is achieved. An integration network consists of mental spaces of three kinds: a generic space, at least two input spaces and a blended space. The purpose of the integration network is to facilitate conceptual integration of existing conceptual structure from different mental spaces and background frames in order to produce emergent structure. The basic integration network consists of four mental spaces.

The generic space motivates a matching operation in which counterparts are identified in the two input spaces. Selective projection then serves to project structure from the two input spaces to the blended space.

Four kinds of integration network have been identified based on the relative contribution of the input spaces and generic space with respect to the emergent structure of the blended space. These constitute the simplex network, the single scope network, the mirror network and the double scope network.
