Intensifying screen
A plastic sheet impregnated with a rare-earth compound, such as calcium tungstate, which absorbs ß radiation and emits light. When placed on one side of a piece of X-ray film with a radioactive sample on the other side, the intensifying screen will capture some of the ß emissions which pass through the film, blackening the X-ray film and so greatly enhancing the sensitivity of the detection. An intensifying screen is used in Southern and northern blotting procedures.
