Killer yeast
A yeast that secretes a protein toxin that affects other organisms, including other yeasts. The best studied examples are toxins secreted by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The yeast contains a dsRNA virus that encodes two toxins by which it is itself unaffected. The toxins enter susceptible cells; one forms a lethal trans-membrane ion channel and the other triggers apoptosis.
