Kothornoi

In addition to the masks worn by the actors in Greek tragedy, high-soled boots called kothornoi were employed to give them added height. An alternate spelling is cothurnus. The equivalent soft heelless shoe worn in Greek comedy was known as the soccus -- or sock in the Elizabethan theatre. The high-soled boot was referred to as a buskin in Elizabethan theatre -- from which derives the term "busker" for an itinerant street-actor.
