Genus of about 50 species of evergreen, epiphytic or terrestrial orchids occuring in coastal regions, often in oak woodland, from Mexico and Central America to Brazil and Argentina. They have robust or slender, elongated pseudobulbs, each bearing 1 or 2 (sometimes 3) semi-rigid, narrowly oval, club-shaped, oblong, strap-shaped, or linear leaves. Brightly coloured flowers are usually produced in racemes from the apex of the pseudobulb.
