Mellot
A "winter fruit" of the northeastern lowlands, so-called because it is harvested unripe in the fall and ripens slowly through the winter months. When unripe it is slightly toxic and highly alkaline. It requires exposure to freezing- or near-freezing temperatures to ripen and develop a soft texture and sweet, slightly acidic tartness that makes it valuable for preserves and spreads.
