Metonymic ICM

An ICM that comes to stand for the entire category of which it is a member. This can work in two ways. Firstly, an ICM can be a sub-category of a cluster model and come to stand for the entire cluster model. For instance, the cluster model for mother may include at least the following ICMs: the birth model, the genetic model, the nurturance model, the marital model and the genealogical model.

One of these can, via metonymy, come to stand for the entire cluster of ICMs.

Secondly, an individual member of a category can come to stand for the category as a whole giving rise to a metonymic ICM. Metonymic ICMs of this kind include the following: social stereotypes, typical examples, ideals, paragons, generators and salient examples.

An important consequence of a metonymic ICM is that by standing for the whole category, it serves as a 'cognitive reference point', setting up norms and expectations against which other members of the category are evaluated and assessed. It follows that metonymic ICMs give rise to typicality effects, as other members of the category are judged as atypical relative to the metonymic model.
