Mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT)
The disruption of normal mitochondrial function by opening of non-specific MPT pores (MPTPs). This allows the free diffusion of small molecules and ions and if prolonged, can lead to necrosis. Another outcome may be the release of cytochrome c which by activating several caspases, can lead to apoptosis.
