The moon had previously been thought to be a dry and dusty place until frozen water was discovered in one of its permanently shadowed craters in 2009. The latest studies found primitive water content in the lunar magmas from soil samples brought back by astronauts during the 1972 Apollo 17 mission suggesting that the water content on the moon is very similar to that of the earth.
