Volcanic glass with flaking properties similar (but superior) to flint, widely used and highly valued for toolmaking in many parts of the world, notably in Mesopotamia, where long-distance trade in obsidian was important by 7500 BC, and in Mesoamerica, where control of obsidian resources was essential for the lowland civilizations of the Olmec and Maya.
