Phytoremediation may involve phytoextraction, the uptake of toxic chemicals by the roots of plants and their concentration in plant tissues, phytovolatilization, the chemical transformation of a toxic substance by a plant, usually by methylation, into a gaseous form, or phytofiltration, the use of crude plant extracts to selectively remove toxic materials from solutions.
