Plumbline

A device used to produce a vertical line between a survey instrument and the reference point over (or sometimes under, in underground work) which it is set. Special plumblines are used in a vertical shaft to transfer a fixed or an azimuth angle from the surface to underground workings for the purpose of orientation. Also known as plumb bob; plummet.
