A strategy for identification and cloning of a new gene; a combination of functional cloning, in which a property of the protein product (e.g. immunogenicity or liganding) is used to scan a cDNA library, and positional cloning, a more laborious approach that relies on chromosome walking from a nearby known sequence identified by genetic linkage.
