provisional ball
When a player can't locate or find the first ball that they hit, then they play a second ball from the place, as close as they can determine, that the first ball was lost. They can then look for the first ball and if they find it and it is not out of bounds, they will not use the second ball and they will not count the second stroke from the second ball.
