A part of a multimeric enzyme; a protein that binds to and inhibits the catalytic subunit unless it is bound to a regulating molecule; e.g. in the case of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase, the subunit that, unless bound to the cyclic nucleotide, inhibits the catalytic subunit.
