The condition of tightly coupled mitochondria that is characterised by their respiratory rate (all but state 3 are slow) and defined by the rate-limiting component: state 1, ADP- and substrate-limiting; state 2, substrate-limiting; state 3, respiratory chain-limiting; state 4, ADP-limiting; state 5, oxygen-limiting.
