Retrotransposon

A mobile genetic element composed of repetitive DNA sequences that flank open reading frames, including one that codes for a reverse transcriptase. In contrast to transposons, which in prokaryotes are transmitted as DNA, retrotransposons are transposed by reverse transcription of the RNA into cDNA, its conversion into double-stranded DNA and insertion into a new position in the genome.
