Revived Russian ice age flower
A plant frozen in Siberian permafrost for over 30,000 years has been brought back to life. Russian scientists used tissue from immature fruit of the plant Silene stenophylla that had been buried deep underground. The plant is similar to species that still exist today in Japan, however, the plant has some small differences that are important in tracing the evolution of the species. Notable differences include root length and number of buds during bloom. Scientists hope this development can be used to bring back other Ice Age plants and potentially animals as well.
