Ribosome-inactivating protein (RIP)

One of a class of plant proteins that bind to elongation factor 2 and thus inactivate ribosomes. Type 1 (e.g. the toxin gelonin) consist of single polypeptide chain proteins; type 2 (e.g. ricin) consist of two proteins linked by a disulphide bond, one the toxin and the other a lectin that attaches to recognition sites on a target cell.
