Route locking
Route locking immobilises the different points along the planned route. Sectional release route locking is generally used, meaning that the switch points are released as and when they are cleared; it either acts on the switch levers in the signalboxes, the mechanical switch control gear in the route-lever signalboxes or directly on the electrical switch control gear in the all-relay interlocking boxes. Other forms of route locking also exist, particularly route locking with no sectional release, where the switch points are released at the same time after the entire route has been cleared.
