These are similar to rankings and a seeded player is one of the better players. The first seed is considered the best player in the tournament. Tennis matches are set up so seeded players don't play one another until the late stages of the tournament. So a number one seed would never play a number two seed in the early stages of a match. Theoretically they should play each other in the final round.
