Semaphore signal
A signal that uses a moving arm to indicate the state of the line ahead. Having the signal arm point straight out usually indicates that the next section contains a train. A raised or lowered arm indicates that the line ahead is clear. The signal usually also contains a lamp in front of which coloured philtres are passed in order to provide an indication of the arm position at night time.
