Slowdown

A reduction in the game's speed caused by the hardware being unable to keep up with the amount of action on screen. Players may develop strategies that intentionally cause this, as when the game is slowed down the player has more time to react to difficult situations. It is sometimes pre-programmed into games at certain points for dramatic effect (e.g. after destroying a larger enemy) or to aid the player at difficult points.
