A cell that can divide to give rise to more cells like itself, but also can divide to give rise to a new stem cell plus one or more differentiated cells of the relevant tissue type (e.g., a hematopoeitic stem cell can give rise to all types of blood cells; neural stem cells give rise to all neuronal types, and glial stem cells to glia.
