Stoma
Intermingled with these ordinary epidermal cells are guard cells. They exist in pairs and provide a small opening or stoma for the exchange of CO2, O2 and H2O vapors. Often these outer surfaces of the epidermal cells have a waxy protective substance called cutin. Usually the upper epidermal layer has fewer guard cells than the lower layers and a thicker cutin layer.
