Task

An operating system concept that refers to the combination of a programme being executed, together with its housekeeping or bookkeeping information. Whenever a programme is executed, accountability connexions enable traces and links to support programme functions. Multitasking operating systems (such as UNIX, OS/2, and Windows) are capable of running many tasks at the same time. In most operating systems, there is a direct relationship between the task and the program, but some "multithreading" operating systems allow a programme to be subdivided into multiple tasks. The terms 'task' and 'process' are often used interchangeably, although some operating systems distinguish between them. See multitasking, TSR, shell.
