The absence or reduction of alpha- or beta-chain synthesis in hemoglobin. The homozygous condition (thalassemia major) is characterised by a high frequency of haemoglobin f and fatal anemia; the heterozygous condition (thalassemia minor) is highly variable but usually occurs with mild symptoms.
