Virus

A segment of self-replicating code that's been illegally planted into a computer program, most often to damage a system, to corrupt a database, or to shut down a network. Countermeasures began in 1987 when a virus infected ARPANET. Anti-virus ("virucide") software attempts to inoculate applications, and firewalls attempt to immunise computers, but the only viable protection against epidemic infection is quarantine; and multiple backups are the only viable precaution against plague. See worm, sniffer, Trojan Horse, smurf, spoofer, deadman, malware, steganography.
