Water hammer

A phenomenon that occurs when the velocity of a fluid in a pipeline is abruptly decreased (such as when a valve is repidly closed). At the point of fluid velocity decrease there is a corresponding increase in fluid pressure that is reflected back up steam as a pressure wave, causing noise and vibration. if the initial pressure increase is great enough, the pipe may burst.
