Any small passerine songbird of the family Ploceidae. They are similar to weaverfinches but are found mostly in the tropical Old World, especially Africa. They have a short,stout bill and dull plumage, and are notable for their ability to build complex covered nests.Common weaverbirds are house sparrows and whydahs.
