Wild medlar

African Medlar (Vangueria infausta) is a species of plant in the Rubiaceae family. This shrub or small tree occurs in abundance in woodlands, scrub, valleys, or sandy dunes throughout much of South Africa.

This species is one of South Africa's more popular veld fruits.

The mealy fig-like flesh of the African medlar is sweet and refreshing and tastes somewhat like apple.

The fruit is mostly eaten raw but in some parts it is stored as dried fruit to be used in time of food scarcity.
