Calculus

Calculus is the mathmatical study of change. Calculus has two branches, differential calculus and integral calculus.

Contributors in Calculus

Calculus

concave upward

Mathematics; Calculus

A function is concave upward on an interval if f"(x ) is positive for every point on that interval.

mean value theorem

Mathematics; Calculus

A key theorem of calculus that relates values of a function to a value of its derivative. The theorem states that for a "nice" function, there is a tangent line parallel to any secant line.

concave downward

Mathematics; Calculus

A function is concave downward on an interval if f"(x ) is negative for every point on that interval.

limit

Mathematics; Calculus

A function f(x ) has the value L for its limit as x approaches c if as the value of x gets closer and closer to c , the value of f(x ) gets closer and closer to L .

lowest common denominator

Mathematics; Calculus

The lowest number that the denominators of two or more fractions will make when they are multiplied together.

square root

Mathematics; Calculus

A number that yields a given number when it is squared. Since 5(5)=25, the square root of 25, is 5.

point of inflection

Mathematics; Calculus

Point of inflection point called the function if the function changes from concave upwards to concave downwards, or vice versa, at the time.
