Coastal engineering

Fairway

Engineering; Coastal engineering

The parts of a waterway that are open and unobstructed for navigation. The main travelled part of a waterway; a marine thoroughfare.

Barrier beach

Engineering; Coastal engineering

A bar essentially parallel to the shore, the crest of which is above normal high water level. Also called offshore barrier and barrier island.

Wave setdown

Engineering; Coastal engineering

Drop in water level outside of the breaker zone to conserve momentum as wave particle velocities and pressures change prior to wave breaking.

Tropical storm

Engineering; Coastal engineering

A tropical cyclone with maximum winds less than 34 m/sec (75 mile per hour). Compare with hurricane or typhoon (winds greater than 34 m/sec).

Mixed current

Engineering; Coastal engineering

Type of tidal current characterised by a conspicious velocity difference between the two floods or two ebbs usually occurring each tidal day.

Slip face

Engineering; Coastal engineering

The steep, downwind slope of a dune; formed from loose, cascading sand that generally keeps the slope at the angle of repose (about 34 deg.).

Inshore zone

Engineering; Coastal engineering

In beach terminology, the zone of variable width extending from the low water line through the breaker zone. Also shoreface.
