General chemistry
Valence bond
Chemistry; General chemistry
In the valence bond theory , a valence bond is a chemical bond formed by overlap of half-filled atomic orbitals on two different atoms.
Complex ion
Chemistry; General chemistry
An ion formed by combination of simpler ions or molecules; for example, Co2+ combines with six molecules of water to form the complex ion Co(H2O)62+.
Conformers
Chemistry; General chemistry
Molecular arrangements that differ only by rotations around single bonds. For example, the "boat" and "chair" forms of cyclohexane are conformers.
Second ionisation energy
Chemistry; General chemistry
The energy needed to remove an electron from an isolated +1 ion. The third ionisation energy would be the energy required to remove an electron from an isolated +2 ion, and so on.
Atomic nucleus
Chemistry; General chemistry
A tiny, incredibly dense positively charged mass at the heart of the atom. The nucleus is composed of protons and neutrons (and other particles). It contains almost all of the mass of the atom but ...
Free energy
Chemistry; General chemistry
Energy that is actually available to do useful work. A decrease in free energy accompanies any spontaneous process . Free energy does not change for systems that are at equilibrium .
Pattern recognition
Chemistry; General chemistry
A computational technique used to find patterns and develop classification schemes for data in very large data sets.
