Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

Agrobacterium

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A genus of bacteria that includes several plant pathogenic species, causing tumour-like symptoms.

X-linked disease

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A genetic disease caused by an allele at a locus on the X-chromosome. In X-linked recessive conditions, a normal female "carrier" passes on the allele on her X chromosome to an affected son.

Homogenotization

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A genetic technique used to replace one copy of a gene, or other DNA sequence within a genome, with an altered copy of that sequence. The DNA is first cloned and then altered in some way, e.g., a ...

Episome

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A genetic extrachromosomal element (e.g., the fertility factor (F) in Escherichia coli ) which replicates within a cell independently of the chromosome and is able to integrate into the host ...

Arabidopsis

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A genus of flowering plants in the Cruciferae. A. thaliana is used in research as a model plant because it has a small genome (5 pairs of chromosomes; 2n = 10) and can be cultured easily, with ...

Tumble tube

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A glass tube mainly used in vitro to agitate and consequently aerate suspension cultures. The tube, which is commonly attached to a slowly revolving platform, is closed at both ends, with a ...

Hypoploid

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

A genetic condition in which a chromosome or segment of a chromosome is underrepresented in the genotype. Opposite: hyperploid.
