Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

Inbreeding

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Matings between individuals that have one or more ancestors in common, the extreme condition being self-fertilization, which occurs in many plants and some primitive animals.

Complementary nucleotides

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Members of the pairs adenine-thymine, adenine-uracil, and guanine-cytosine that have the ability to hydrogen bond to one another.

Micro-isolating system

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Mechanical separation of single cells or protoplasts thus allowing them to proliferate individually.

Cross-breeding

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Mating between members of different populations (lines, breeds, races or species).

Primary meristem

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Meristem of the shoot or root tip giving rise to the primary plant body.

Assortative mating

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Mating in which the partners are chosen on the basis of phenotypic similarity.

Discordant

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Members of a pair showing different, rather than similar, characteristics.
