Genetic engineering

The science of modifying and manipulating genes to create new artificial DNA or synthetic genes of different organisms. There are many purposes for genetic engineering, some of which include finding better treatment for diseases, or simply for discovering new organism of interest.

Contributors in Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering

Vascular plants

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Plants possessing organised vascular tissues.

Self-pollination

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Pollen of a plant is transferred to the female part of the same plant or another plant with the same genetic makeup. Opposite: cross-pollination.

Nurse culture

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Planting a cell from a suspension culture on a raft of philtre paper above a callus tissue piece (nurse tissue). The philtre paper serves to prevent tissue union but allows the flow of essential ...

Variegated

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Plants having both green and albino tissues. This difference in colour may result from viral infection, nutritional deficiency, or may be under genetic or physiological control.

Conjugative functions

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Plasmid-based genes and their products that facilitate the transfer of a plasmid from one bacterium to another.

Subspecies

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Population(s) of organisms sharing certain characteristics that are not present in other populations of the same species.

Chromoplast

Biotechnology; Genetic engineering

Plastid containing pigments, such a chloroplast, or one in which carotenoids predominate.
