Barometer

Earth science; Geology

Any instrument used to measure air (barometric) pressure. Two types of commonly used barometers are the aneroid barometer and mercury barometer.

A-horizon

Earth science; Geology

The top layer of soil. Plant and other organic debris builds up in this layer. This is the part of the soil generally referred to as 'top soil'.

Abyssal plain

Earth science; Geology

Large area of extremely flat ocean floor lying near a continent and generally over 4 km in depth.

Cone of depression

Earth science; Geology

A downward distortion or dimple in the water table that forms as a well pumps water faster than it can flow through the aquifer.

Burial metamorphism

Earth science; Geology

Takes place in an environment where pressure and temperature are barely more intense than during diagenesis , typically in a deepening sequence of sediments.

Barograph

Earth science; Geology

A recording type instrument that provides a continuous trace of air pressure variation with time, forming a permanent barogram; usually an aneroid barometer is used.

Ablation complex

Earth science; Geology

Assemblage of sediments deposited during the ablation of a glacier, generally by being let down from at or near the glacier surface by melting of underlying ice.
