Nuclear energy

Nuclear binding energy is the energy required to split a nucleus of an atom into its component parts. The component parts are neutrons and protons, which are collectively called nucleons. The binding energy of nuclei is always a positive number, since all nuclei require net energy to separate them into individual protons and neutrons.

Contributors in Nuclear energy

Nuclear energy

As low as is reasonably achievable (alara)

Energy; Nuclear energy

Making every reasonable effort to maintain exposures to ionising radiation as far below the dose limits as practical, consistent with the purpose for which the licenced activity is undertaken, taking ...

Binding energy

Energy; Nuclear energy

The minimum energy required to separate the nucleus of an atom into its component neutrons and protons.

Beyond design-basis accidents

Energy; Nuclear energy

This term is used as a technical way to discuss accident sequences that are possible but were not fully considered in the design process because they were judged to be too unlikely. (In that sense, ...

Beta particle

Energy; Nuclear energy

A charged particle (with a mass equal to 1/1837 that of a proton) that is emitted from the nucleus of a radioactive element during radioactive decay (or disintegration) of an unstable atom. A ...

Becquerel (Bq)

Energy; Nuclear energy

One of three units used to measure radioactivity, which refers to the amount of ionising radiation released when an element (such as uranium) spontaneously emits energy as a result of the radioactive ...

Bayesian prior

Energy; Nuclear energy

A way to express the context of a Bayesian estimation in which initial data are updated as new data become available.

Bayesian estimation

Energy; Nuclear energy

A mathematical formulation, using Bayes' theorem, by which the likelihood of an event can be estimated taking explicit consideration of certain contextual features (such as amount of data, nature of ...
