Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding is the primary process for manufacturing plastic parts used in consumer goods such as computer keyboards, monitors, bottle caps, cups and solid plastic articles. Plastic is known to be a very versatile and economical material that is used in many applications. Injection molding involves taking plastic in the form of pellets or granules and heating this material until a melt is obtained. Then the melt is forced into a split-die chamber/mold where it is allowed to "cool" into the desired shape. The mold is then opened and the part is ejected, at which time the cycle is repeated.

Contributors in Plastic injection molding

Plastic injection molding

Colour concentrate

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A plastic compound which contains a high percentage of pigment, to be blended in appropriate amounts with the base resin so that the correct final colour is achieved.

Dwell

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A pause in the applied pressure to a mould during the injection cycle just before the mould is completely closed. This dwell allows any gases formed or present to escape from the moulding material.

Air burn

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A patch or streak of brown or black material on the component caused by air or gases that have not been properly vented from the mould and have caused the material to overheat and burn.

Reinforced plastic

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A plastic composition in which fibrous reinforcements are imbedded, with strength properties greatly superior to those of the base resin.

Hot-runner mould

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A mould in which the runners are insulated from the chilled cavities and are kept hot. Hot-runner moulds make parts that have no scrap.

Family mould

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A mould that produces non-identical parts simultaneously from multiple cavities.

Knockout pin

Manufacturing; Plastic injection molding

A pin that ejects a moulded article from the mold.
