Resistors

Bias resistor

Electronic components; Resistors

A resistor used to bias a circuit. A resistor used to apply a DC bias or reference voltage. Bias resistors are changing depending on the actual transistor used in this example schematic.

Tolerance

Electronic components; Resistors

A permissible deviation from a specified value. A maximum electrical or mechanical variation of specifications that can be tolerated without impairing the operation of a device.

Shunt resistor

Electronic components; Resistors

A resistor placed across the terminals of another device. Example: a shunt resistor placed across the terminals of a potentiometer to change the devices characteristics.

Ohms per Square

Electronic components; Resistors

The resistance of any square area of thin film resistive material as measured between two parallel sides.

Spiral wound resistor

Electronic components; Resistors

A resistor having an element that is wound in a spiral along its length between its terminals.

Panel mount resistor

Electronic components; Resistors

A style of resistor that mounts to a panel, normally an adjustable resistor or potentiometer.

Derating

Electronic components; Resistors

The process of reducing the rated wattage of a resistor based on the possible maximum operating temperature.
