Resistors

Maximum working voltage

Electronic components; Resistors

The maximum voltage stress (dc or rms ac) that may be applied to the resistor. Also refer to voltage rating. Note the AC voltage is assumed to be a 60Hz sine wave unless otherwise stated.

Aluminium housed resistor

Electronic components; Resistors

A resistor encased in an aluminium housing normally having a flat base for chassis or heat sink mounting. These power resistors may either be derated by temperature, or by derated by mounting area.

Stability

Electronic components; Resistors

The overall ability of a resistor to maintain its initial resistance value over extended periods of time when subjected to any combination of environmental conditions and electrical stresses.

Encapsulation

Electronic components; Resistors

A plastic protective coating applied to a component. The plastic determines the color, finish and hardness of the finished part. Note that the type of encapsulation may affect the resistors power ...

Insulation resistance

Electronic components; Resistors

The dc resistance measured between all terminals connected together and the case, exterior insulation, or external hardware. The resistance between a terminal and some point on the resistor body.

Damping resistor

Electronic components; Resistors

Low value resistors used in series with the line (output of an IC) to damp out line reflections. Low value resistors to slow the rise time of an output to reduce signal reflections on the line.

Varistor

Electronic components; Resistors

A resistor that changes value with applied voltage. A varistor may also be called a voltage dependent resistor (VDR). Varistors will have a negative voltage coefficient.
