ugljični dioksid
Ugljični dioksid je načinjen od atoma ugljika i kisika. Prirodno je prisutan u našoj atmosferi i dio je kruženja ugljika. Svakodnevni procesi u biljnom i životinjskom svijetu povećavaju količinu CO2 u atmosferi i smanjuju je. Međutim, točna razina CO2 u atmosferi je važna jer se radi o stakleničkom plinu, što znači da CO2 utječe na temperaturu Zemlje. Izgaranjem fosilnih goriva se otpušta CO2 u atmosferu. Odatle potječe zabrinutost da intenzivna uporaba fosilnih goriva uzrokuje klimatske promjene.
