Običan dizel, kao i običan benzin, rafinira se iz nafte, ali je gušća, teža tekućina s većom "energetskom gustoćom" - što znači da pruža bolju ekonomiju goriva. S loše strane, ako ne kupite zračni filter, dizelovi ispušni plinovi su značajan izvor čestica i drugih izvora zagađenja zraka. Dostupnost dizela koji se ne proizvodi iz nafte je u porastu širom svijeta, što se najčešće odnosi na biodizel.
