Specifically, a British philosopher of the 17th and 18th century such as Hobbes, tended to believe that knowledge derives from our sensory experience and its ramifications. Berkeley and Hume, in particular, maintained (as nominalists) that the mind has no essentially abstract, rational ideas of the sort that were supposed to form the basis of science for the rationalist (which see along with neo-empiricist and neo-rationalist).
