1435
The gauge of 1 435 mm used for standard tracks in Europe and several other countries appears to be somewhat of a mystery. Why was the number not rounded up? Opinions are divided and the whole issue continues to come in for discussion. From the English origins of the railway (then again, 1 435 mm does not correspond to any Anglo-Saxon measurement – see 4-foot below) to other unlikely beliefs (such as some sort of reference to the width of Roman roads), the Internet is actually the latest hotspot for "chatting about the problem". There are several chat rooms available where people can show off their knowledge, oops, let's make that give their opinion as to where 1435 came from. Cyber-progress is a wonderful thing...
