1Q84
A novel by the Japanese author Haruki Murakami, first published in 2009 in Japanese, then localized to English in 2011. The title is a pun on the George Orwell novel 1984 - in Japanese, "9" is pronounced similarly to "Q".
The story follows two characters, with the focus switching between them each chapter. The first is Aomame, a young woman who is increasingly finding that world history doesn't seem to match her memories, and Tengo, a slightly reclusive teacher and writer who finds himself interacting with a cast of strange individuals when asked to re-write a manuscript.
The book has been very successful both critically and commercially, being listed as the 2nd best book of 2011 by Amazon.
