The code name for the U.S. manned Lunar exploration programme that successfully completed the first human landing on the Moon by Apollo 11 on July 20 1969. The programme began tragically with the deaths of Apollo 1 astronauts Virgil I. Grissom, Edward H. White II and Roger B. Chaffee in a launch pad fire during a preflight test in January 1967.
